freezing injunction

freezing injunction
A court order preventing a defendant from dealing with specified assets. Such an order will be granted in cases in which the plaintiff can show that there will be a substantial risk that any judgment given against the defendant will be worthless, because the defendant will sell assets to avoid paying it. It is usually granted to prevent assets leaving the jurisdiction of the English courts, but may in exceptional circumstances extend to assets abroad. It was formerly called a Mareva injunction, after the 1975 case Mareva Compania Naviera SA v International Bulkcarriers SA.
